Shopify and Squarespace are both excellent platforms, but they're built for different priorities. Shopify is an e-commerce engine first — everything else is secondary. Squarespace is a design-first website builder that added a capable store later. Choosing the wrong one can mean hitting a wall exactly when your business starts growing.

The short answer

Choose Shopify if selling products is your primary goal. It has the deepest inventory management, the most payment gateway integrations, better abandoned-cart recovery, and a vast app ecosystem built specifically for commerce.

Choose Squarespace if you need a beautiful website that also sells things. It's the better choice for portfolios, service businesses, and creatives who want their site to look exceptional and sell a limited range of products or services alongside.

E-commerce features

Shopify wins clearly here. It supports hundreds of payment gateways out of the box, has advanced shipping rules, point-of-sale hardware, multi-channel selling (Amazon, Instagram, TikTok), and a 10,000+ app store. If you plan to sell in any serious volume, these tools become essential.

Squarespace Commerce is solid for smaller stores. You get product variants, discount codes, subscriptions, and abandoned cart emails on higher plans. What it lacks is the depth of integrations — if you need a niche shipping provider or a specific ERP connection, Shopify almost certainly has the app; Squarespace may not.

Design and templates

Squarespace's templates are consistently among the most visually polished of any website builder. If aesthetics matter — for a luxury brand, a photographer, or a boutique — Squarespace is hard to beat.

Shopify themes have improved significantly and there are excellent paid options, but the platform is fundamentally less flexible for non-store pages. Blog posts, about pages, and content-heavy sections feel like afterthoughts compared to Squarespace.

SEO and marketing

Both platforms cover the basics well — editable page titles, meta descriptions, alt text, and sitemaps. Squarespace has slightly better built-in blogging tools, which helps with content marketing. Shopify's SEO can be extended considerably with apps and is the standard choice for larger e-commerce SEO campaigns.

The bottom line

If you're building a store that you want to grow, use Shopify. If you're building a beautiful website that happens to sell things, use Squarespace. The crossover point is usually when your monthly orders exceed 50–100: below that, Squarespace's commerce features are perfectly adequate and the design payoff is worth it.
